An artisan handmade haven
Regular readers will know that I love discovering new independent stores. I’ve not long discovered The Arter. Situated at Shakespeare Birthplace Trust it showcases handmade products from independent artisan designers and crafters. The concept of The Arter is to provide the shop window for customers to discover new local designers and products.
I haven’t come across this concept in a permanent store before, only as a pop-up, but it really works. I know lots of artisans designers and crafters who would love to be able to have a store in which to sell, but by being tied to set opening hours means they wouldn’t have time to make their products. Paula and Rachael started The Arter last April and define it as Stratford’s home of handmade. They hold open days through the year, to find new products, inviting artisan designers and crafters to pitch for a space in the store. Having to satisfy both local and tourist shoppers, they want to make sure that there are new products to keep customers returning. The delights you’ll find are jewellery, ceramics, textiles, upcycling, millinery, sculpture, glass, prints and paintings.
Individual hats designed by Louise Pocock – my favourite is the black and red.
Whether you are looking for a gift for a special occasion, birthday or even a little something for yourself, you are sure to find something unique at The Arter.
