There’s nothing like a spa day to feel rejuvenated and ready to tackle the world again. That’s exactly what I did this time last week. Visiting on a Monday was a little luxury in itself and the weekend really did feel stretched. I visited Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat with Mum for a little rest and relaxation, which is just what we both needed.
In my mind anything North of Birmingham always feels such a long way away. However, it took us just under an hour to reach the beautiful town of Stone, in Staffordshire, with Moddershall Oaks a short drive away nestled in the beautiful Staffordshire countryside which gave a tranquil feel as soon as we arrived.
I didn’t expect to see so many people, being a Monday, but then any day is great to take a spa day. We were warmly greeted at reception and provided with an itinerary for the day. Our Little Luxury spa package included full use of the facilities, two course lunch and a 25 minute Elemis Advanced Anti Aging facial or customised aromatherapy back, neck and shoulder massage. Our treatment time had already been booked for us, which was great as we then didn’t have to try and decide when to have them, and we both chose the facial. We were seated in the Deli Bar where we filled out the obligatory personal details. We were also presented with the lunch menu and asked to peruse this so we could place our lunch order.
After spending time deciding on our lunch choices there was just enough time left, before our treatments, to have a tour of all the spa facilities. Moddershall Oaks is a family run Spa Retreat and a month ago they opened their fabulous new spa extension which includes the Deli Bar, an outdoor vitality pool, sauna, fireside lounge retreat and spa shop. In addition to this, there is an indoor pool, jacuzzi, steam room and treatment rooms within the original building.
Our facials were one after another, so we waited in the small reception for each other to finish. The rooms were dimly lit with sarongs rather than warm towels on the bed. This is a first and I must admit to preferring the warmth of the towels. None the less the facial was nice & relaxing and the Elemis products were very intoxicating inducing the desired relaxation. Mum also enjoyed her facial and we were both thankful for being asked whether we wanted oil with the scalp massage, as we were straight off to lunch.
A few short steps away, from the treatment rooms, is the lakeside restaurant. All the spa visitors were dining together in the same space, which meant visitors to the restaurant weren’t eating amongst those of us in our swimsuits and bath robes. We both really enjoyed our two course lunch and added a glass of Prosecco as a little lunchtime indulgence. I chose buffalo mozzarella with slow roasted tomatoes on bruchetta followed by salmon with asparagus, tomato and new potatoes on baby leaf salad. Mum chose Sicilian arancini which is crispy risotto fritters filled with blue cheese, followed by grilled halloumi with asparagus, tomato and new potatoes on a baby leaf salad. We were pleased to see that the restaurant were using quality cutlery from Robert Welch and great to see independents supporting each other.
We took a short stroll by the lake after lunch and it was a nice surprise to see it stocked with fish.
We spent most of the afternoon relaxing in the fireside lounge retreat. Other guests came and went, some more quiet than others. Whilst we caught up on our reading we also indulged in a scone with homemade strawberry jam and clotted cream. We’re just glad this wasn’t a healthy spa retreat!
Having spent the afternoon looking at the new vitality pool I thought I’d best try it before we left. As it was a warm humid day and the pool is 37 degrees I couldn’t manage much more than 15 minutes. I suspect on a day with a nice breeze it would be even better. As it was I sat in the countryside relaxing whilst I let the jacuzzi bubbles work their magic.
A bit more time relaxing in the lounge retreat and it was time to go home. The day seemed to have gone by quickly, but at the same time, we both felt completely relaxed and rejuvenated having both really enjoyed our spa day. We liked the feel of the spa, it wasn’t at all pretentious, although it was glamorous in appearance the guests were down to earth which made Mum feel much more comfortable. Being of a different generation, to me, she wasn’t looking forward to it being both men and women, but as the other guests were of mixed ages she said she felt more relaxed than she thought she would. The staff were all pleasant and friendly, with nothing being too much trouble. If there was one, little, thing that we would change it’s the level of the music in the lounge retreat and treatment room reception, it was a little too loud to feel totally relaxed. But overall we really enjoyed our Little Luxury to start the week.
Thank you to Spa PR Company and Moddershall Oaks for the invite to the Spa Retreat.
