What do you use when you bake?
I love baking but I don't always make enough time for it. Not only do I find it relaxing and therapeutic but the sense of achievement of producing something that tastes scrumptious is certainly worth it. I recently brought two c1950's Mason Cash mixing bowls from Felicitations Vintage based in Warwick. My mum has one of these bowls and always used it when baking. I've often seen these in antique stores but put off buying them because of the splits in the ceramic glaze. I know you can get replicas, but for me it was always about having the original design of a white interior glaze and a light brown exterior glaze with a diamond exterior pattern. So on one of my regular visits to Felicitations Vintage I got a little bit excited to see that Alison had two bowls in perfect condition. Well I couldn't leave them sitting on the shelf could I?
Each size of bowl is identified by a number. I have18 and 12.
I use the large bowl for making my jewelled cherry and banana cake. I feel very grown up using my Mason Cash mixing bowls, the sound of the wooden spoon against the ceramic was very satisfying. This is what baking should be about. Using the right tools for the job certainly makes the experience of baking so much more pleasurable. I'll be using these when I bake my next cake for the Clandestine Cake Club.
A domestic goddess always uses........the right tools for the job!

Cherry and Banana Cake
Would you like to try my Jewelled Cherry and Banana Cake?
You'll remember from do you love cake? that I whipped up a jewelled cherry and banana cake for my first Clandestine Cake Club. This is a twist on a Nigella recipe from 'Kitchen recipes from the heart of the home'. If you want to have a go at making this scrumptious cake, that literally takes 10 minutes to prepare and 45 minutes to cook, follow these instructions.
Method
125g soft unsalted butter
4 small/ medium ripe bananas
150g caster sugar
2 eggs
175g plain flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
100g dried or glacie cherries
If you want to make the gluten free version, replace the flour, baking powder and bicarb with gluten free products.
1x 900g (2lb) loaf tin or 8" cake tin
Preheat the oven to 170C/ gas mark 3
Put some baking parchment into your tin and set aside

1x 900g (2lb) loaf tin or 8" cake tin
Preheat the oven to 170C/ gas mark 3
Put some baking parchment into your tin and set aside
- Melt the butter in a saucepan, then set aside to cool
- Peel and mash the bananas in a bowl
- Beat the sugar into the cooled butter, then beat in the bananas and eggs. Gentle fold in the flour, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda.
- Then add the cherries
- Fold so that all ingredients are incorporated
- Transfer to the baking tin ensuring all the mixture is included
- Bake for about 50 to 55 minutes, but start checking after 45 minutes. When ready the cake will becoming away from the sides of the tin and when a knife inserted into the centre it should come out clean
- Leave for approximately 10 minutes to cool and then turn out onto a wire cooling tray
Nigella's Notes:
The cake can be made 2 days ahead. Wrap in baking parchment and store in airtight container. It will keep like this for 3 - 4 days in a cool place.
The cake can be frozen, tightly wrapped in double layer of clingfilm and a layer of foil, for up to 3 months. Defrost overnight at room temperature.
If you try my recipe I'd love to know your thoughts.
There's nothing like putting your own twist on a recipe.......that's what makes it unique!

Blighty Boutique
Do you love all things vintage?
After missing the last Blighty Boutique due to my having the wrong date in the diary, I was really looking forward to the Blighty Boutique on the Jubliee weekend. As you'll know it wasn't the best weekend for the weather, never the less I braced myself and made the effort and I'm so glad that I did. Blighty Boutique is a fair devoted to vintage and handmade items. I'd visited last summer and was impressed by the quality of the stalls, the prices and the organisation. So I was keen to make a return visit to see what vintage treasures I could find.
Entering the venue was like walking back in time. I arrived early in the day and the hall was already full. There was old time music playing , ladies dressed in 40's and 50's dresses and an array of stalls selling items from by gone years. At the entrance there was a little room set up for tea and cake, all decked out in Union Jack bunting. It took me some time to even get to the first few stalls. As well as re-worked furniture, there were lots of stalls selling china, glassware and crafters with original handmade items. There was something for everyone, whatever vintage era is your favourite or whatever you might collect. I loved the samples of material, old magazines and tins that stood proud against the china and glassware.
Among the stalls I found Daisy Cupcakes, selling her edible works of art all decorated for the Jubilee.
Also Alison who owns Felicitations Vintage was there selling her beautiful china and vintage finds. A china set really caught my eye, but I was trying to be good, as my china cabinet is getting rather full. However having gone round all the stalls I found myself back at Felicitations and by then someone had brought most of the set. I just couldn't resist buying something from the set as it is so pretty. So I brought the sugar bowl, which I can find many uses for within my collection (which one day I will introduce you too).
There were over 480 visitors to the Blighty Boutique and I'm sure they all left with something that will fill their lives with a little more vintage joy. The next two fairs are on Sunday 9 September and Sunday 9 December. Maybe I'll see you there!
Celebrate by gone years........get vintage inspired!

Urban Coffee Company Coffee Connoisseurs
Am I now a coffee connoisseur?
April's coffees were Brazil Daterra
Sunrise - what Rich says:
"Delicate fruit aromas begin with a pleasant acidity that becomes more intense as it cools. This is a short cup but intense when prepared correctly to bring out the delicacy of flavor."
Yellow Bourbon - what Rich says:
"It starts with a slight winey fruit, malty sweetness, pecan nut and more umami-like notes as well. This is more like a classic Brazil with a twist. Big and bold but with an amount of complexity not usually found in Brazilian coffee."
I enjoyed both of these coffees, even though the Sunrise did not have any nutty or chocolate flavors, I could easily drink these on a daily basis. Both were strong enough without being too strong.
May's coffees
Guatemalan St Nichols Estate - what Rich says:
"It's a very balanced cup, the lighter roasts, bright but not to tartly so. The body is buttery and dense and roast flavors are dormant at all the roast levels, from a soft milk chocolate to fairly intense chocolate."
Indonesian Sumatra - what Rich says:
"A deep rich smokey flavored coffee. Light acidity with full body and a rich persistent finish. Great as an espresso and bold enough for the flavor to cut through milk."
As with March, I only really enjoyed the chocolaty coffee, this time from Guatemala. The Indonesian coffee was again not strong enough and I needed to use more of it to get an intense flavor.
If you love coffee, or know someone who does, I would definitely recommend a coffee connoisseurs club subscription.
I'm not yet a coffee connoisseur........but I know now what I like!

Clandestine Cake Club
Do you love cake?
I've been a bit busy of late and haven't had lots of opportunities to log into Twitter and catch up on what is happening. Wednesday night I took a few minutes to check tweets and came across a conversation from Daisy Cupcakes about cake clubs near Warwick. I'd seen the piece on TV, whilst at the gym, about the Clandestine Cake Clubs. So whilst cycling, and going no where fast, I watched people eat gorgeous cake. I didn't think much of it until I saw the tweet from Daisy. I dived straight in and asked if I could go along if she found a local club. She did and late that night I was baking my jewelled cherry and banana cake to take with me. And so last night I went to my first Clandestine Cake Club in Stratford-upon-Avon with Daisy Cupcakes, her husband Andrew and Sally Crane.
The concept is that everyone bakes a cake and takes it along to a 'secret' venue. Some clubs do have themes so you have to bake a cake around the theme. Seen as I had baked a cake with the ingredients I had in, thanks to Nigella, I hoped there wasn't a theme, or at least I would be forgiven as it was my first time.
I turned up at the venue where they had set a side a lovely room for us. I loved this patch work chair.
There were some lovely cakes including a parsnip and apple cake and a stunning Union Jack cake. I only managed a couple of slices before I was full and I hadn't even had dinner in anticipation of eating cake.
As people started to sample the cakes the conversation flowed. It was a lovely mixed group with about 25 people, of all ages, in total through the evening.
Keep calm......eat cake!

An Irish themed party
Do you have to go to Ireland to enjoy the Irish spirit?
This weekend saw my family and I celebrating one of my cousin's big birthdays. I started helping her plan the party back in the autumn and we had gone through a number of variants before we settled on a garden party with an Irish theme. I'd offered up a number of options for themes including kitsch flowers (Cath Kidston style), English country garden (gingham), red, white and blue (Jubilee), but is was an Irish theme that was settled on due to our heritage.

Bag Servant Body Shape
When buying a handbag do you consider whether it suits your body shape?
Within the past seven months I've worked with Emily Jayne to develop my personal style and create my summer capsule wardrobe. But the one thing that we have not touched on is handbags. As you'll know from do you use or wear your handbag? and the perfect everyday bag? I have a number of handbags that suit my handbag personality. But what I haven't considered is whether they suit my body shape. So I asked my friends at Bag Servant what I should be considering for my hour glass shape, here's their advise about how to consider your body shape when buying your next handbag.
We love to see what the celebrities are wearing on the red carpet and we are influenced each season by the catwalk. We love investing our hard earned money on fashion that makes us look and feel good. But do we ever consider the size, shape and style of handbag that will suit our body shape?
We love to see what the celebrities are wearing on the red carpet and we are influenced each season by the catwalk. We love investing our hard earned money on fashion that makes us look and feel good. But do we ever consider the size, shape and style of handbag that will suit our body shape?
We are used
to body shape terminology from television stylists such as Nicky Hambleton-Jones
or the fabulous Gok Wan who have simply transformed the lives of so many women
on the brink of emotional torture. Even the most fashion-savvy amongst us can
do with a nod of approval or a stern word of disapproval when it comes to right
and wrong fashion choices.
So, our body
shapes are a fruit bowl of apple or strawberry like chic mummy to be Drew
Barrymore , pear like the sugar delight Eva Longoria, butternut squash (the
hourglass) like the delicious glamourpuss Nigella Lawson, petite like trend-setter
Kylie Minogue, and athletic like sporty-luxe Duchess of Cambridge.
When it comes
to choosing the best handbag to accentuate and flatter your shape, there are
just a few rules…yes, ladies – RULES to keep the fashion police at bay.
If you are apple, you want to draw attention away from
the tummy area. The best every day bag is a hand held, and for evening a
cross-body mini bag (very hot this season). Avoid anything slouchy. Structure
is your friend. We love and recommend the Reiss Handheld Leather Satchel. We recently
did an in-store tried and tested with this season’s Reiss handbags, and they
are divine! For the evening we adore this Riki Rosetta Blue Lizard Croco – the
shoulder piece is the key feature on this bag as it is a mix of leather and
metal and is moulded to your shoulder. This means you can have a canapƩ in one
hand, cocktail in the other, and not spend your night worrying about
bag-slippage.
For the pears, you’ll have a heavier bottom half.
You can even everything out with a fabulous tote or shopper. If you are a
slimmer pear then experiment with patterns and florals. On trend this season is
the glamazon look. This look is great for clothing for pears as well as bags.
You can wear all glamazon print, or just opt for a fabulously colourful bag. We
love this Jamin Puech Raffia Tote. And for the evening, nothing looks more
stunning against tanned summer skin than a shot of bright neon. We adore this
Stella McCartney hot pink woven faux leather clutch.
Our butternut squash ladies are our envy. All woman with
curves in all the right places. But you don’t want to draw attention to your
bust or your hips. Emphasise that tiny waist with a structured tote or satchel
especially in a pop of bright colour. It’s summer, so go for it with this
on-trend burst of orange in this chic Osprey of London Ladybug Large Croc GrabBag. For the evening, reveal that glamourpuss with this Anya Hindmarch glitter clutch
in red…make sure you are ready to be photographed.
Did you know that if you are petite, you certainly shouldn’t shy away
from a big bag? Nothing that will drown you, but certainly something that says
‘I’m a big bag lover, and proud of it’. And girl, you’ll look great too. Our
fabulous finds are the Diane Von Furstenberg Peacock Blue Drew Bag…hot, hot,
hot. Make sure you team with gold accessories, especially a wrist-cuff. We also
adore the oversized clutch, and love the Riki Rosetta Orange Lizard Clutch. You
can read our review here…
So, you’re fit and trim and look the
part too. You’re athletic in
shape, and sometimes get called the tom boy shape or, the rhubarb. It doesn’t
mean that you can’t do girly-glam. Look at our stunning Duchess Kate who mixes
designer with the high street. There are some divine oversized clutches and
pouches that are hot right now. Add in a little of the neon trend, and we want
your look. Duchess Kate has been papped
clutching Reiss, Dune, L.K Bennet, and Whistles. By day, fall in love with this
bright yellow Marc by Marc Jacobs ‘Too Hot to Handle’ Bucket Bag – I am in
love!. And for the evening we adore this Reiss Cross OverStrap clutch with a retro twist.
You will love
the expert handbag fashion advice detailed in the BagServant ultimateBuyer’s Guide.
Thanks to Bag Servant for an insightful body shape guide, I'll certainly be bearing this in mind, along with my handbag personality when I make my next handbag purchase.
A handbag for every occasion.........as long as it suits my butternut squash curves!

Lula Belle Meets Purple Pepper
Are you championing independent businesses?
I met Sarah at the launch of Love Warwick. Part of the launch involved a speed networking session and we got talking about Purple Pepper. I felt Sarah's story was really interesting and a few minutes wasn't enough so we met recently to talk more. In less than two years Sarah has grown her jewellery business and as a result also undertakes talks at events, something she never thought she would be doing.
As I already had a client base I started to do more such as hosting jewellery parties, attending fairs, charity events and having a stall at Warwick market. In my first year I said yes to as events as possible and this helped to shape the way forward. From attending wedding fayres I began to get bespoke commissions for brides, mother of the bride and bridesmaids; I get a real buzz from being able to create something that is bespoke and compliments the bride's day. Everything I make is a one off piece and my clients all love to know what they are wearing is the only one in the world and in most cases, made to fit them perfectly. Working so hard in the first year has helped me make many great contacts which mostly lead to yet more contacts! I also attended, and still attend many networking events.
What are the philosophies of Purple Pepper?
I want to create something special that gives people joy and brings them memories every time they wear the jewellery.
What have been the highlights so far?
What does the future hold for your business?
Through my feature, Lula Belle Meets, I'm championing independent businesses and finding out what drives people to become self employed.
Where did the idea for Purple Pepper Jewellery come from?
I'd been made redundant and I was thinking about what to do next, when I suggested the
idea of transforming my hobby into a business. I have been
making bespoke handmade jewellery for a number of years and have always
received great complements. It all started when I reluctantly attended a
jewellery making workshop whilst on a weekend away with friends and
to my surprise I really enjoyed it. From there I started to make all
sorts of jewellery experimenting with different materials and
designs.
How did you develop your idea?
designs.
How did you develop your idea?
I didn't have much to lose so I set about developing a
website and getting business cards etc. The name that I had been using when
I was making jewellery as a hobby was ‘Sparkles’ but whilst talking to a
graphic designer friend she asked me what ideas I had for a logo. After
a brainstorming session it was evident that the current business name was no match for
taking my business forward. So we started with my favourite colour,
which is purple and my doodling of hearts. I also read an article about
Moonpig.com and like the idea of a funky name that would be remembered. My
friend said that there are purple peppers and that’s how Purple Pepper
Jewellery was born.
Was it easy to set up your business?

What are the philosophies of Purple Pepper?
I want to create something special that gives people joy and brings them memories every time they wear the jewellery.
What is the USP of
Purple Pepper?
Everything is bespoke and handmade which makes it unique to the wearer.
You won't find anything like it on the high street or see the same piece
being worn by anyone else.
Who would you say are your competitors?
Who would you say are your competitors?
Obviously there is a lot of competition out there, you can buy jewellery everywhere
from the supermarket to independent boutiques and the high street stores.
Great if you want to wear something that you might see someone else wearing.
Of course there are also other people who make handmade jewellery with
similar materials to myself, but I hope my style and design stand out as well
as people liking a personal and professional service.
What is your strategy for telling people about your business?
Word of mouth has been one of the best ways that people hear about my business. I also tried a Groupon deal last year and that worked out really well and I reached people who may not of heard about me otherwise. I started a market stall in Warwick which I did for approximately 9 months. I made many great contacts this way and it was great fun, but I'm not planning on going back as I really used it as a marketing tool - and it did the job!
What is your strategy for telling people about your business?

I made many great contacts this way and it was great fun, but I'm not planning on going back as I really used it as a marketing tool - and it did the job!
I am using social media including Twitter and Facebook to
reach out to a wider audience and to ensure the Purple Pepper brand is seen by
as many people as possible. I'm also in the process of re-launching my
website as I learnt the hard way by not doing enough research into a good web
designer in the early days and it really wasn't worth it. My advice to others is
to go without a website and really do your homework rather than rush into one
like I did!
What have been the highlights so far?
I started to run my own jewellery making workshops after the
amazing feedback responses I got from the jewellery parties. These have
proved a great hit. At these I show people the items I made at that first
fateful jewellery workshop I attended and tell them my story of how I have got
to where I am today. From this I was approached to tell my story to other
ladies as I was seen as being very inspirational, so I now speak at various
events and groups around Warwickshire. I also now teach short courses for
Beginner and Improver jewellery making at Stratford college... something I
never imagined I’d be able to do in a million years! Everyone loves to go away
with their handmade item(s) of jewellery at the end of each lesson or after
private workshops.
What does the future hold for your business?
So much as happened within the last 18 months that sometimes
I have to pinch myself and be reminded of how all of this started. I
particularly enjoy the teaching side of things as it's great to share my skills
with others and meet new like-minded people. People bead for all sorts of
reasons or for no reason at all ... it's a great way for people to get together
for a coffee morning or an evening out for a birthday celebration - and all at
affordable prices. I've taught a number of men to bead and they're actually
very good at it you know! Beading can also be a great way of increasing
confidence and boosting self esteem as the instructions I give are step by step
and very clear, as well as plenty of hands-on help.
One day I’d like to think that Purple Pepper will be 'us'
rather than just 'me'. Things need to grow a little more before I can expand
but the seed is now sown and you just need to keep your eyes open for future
developments!
I have found a gap in the market in certain areas of
Warwickshire and I'm already feeling excited about a new venture! From all the
amazing testimonials Purple Pepper has received I know we can make success of a
new venture - all you need is to be truly madly deeply passionate about what
you love, and it will work ... so watch this space!
What would you say to someone who has a business idea and
wants to set up their own business?
If you have the passion and the belief then you have little
to lose. It's very daunting to begin with but once you start hearing all
the positive feedback and compliments it gives you an even stronger urge to
make things really happen. I went to many networking lunches and meetings
and it proved helpful being with others in the same position. Give it a go, what have you got
to lose. If you find yourself in the position that I was in, redundancy
can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. If I can do it then you certainly can too. I'd just moved
house and had to find something I felt comfortable doing - but never in a
million years did I think I'd be setting up a jewellery business!
Thank you Sarah, again yet another inspirational story and one that will probably resonate with many people. Redundancy can either be a very scary time or a chance to do something that you love and become your own boss. What is right for one person might not be right for another, but it is certainly an option to explore, especially if you have a hobby that can be turned into a business or you have a profession that you can develop into a consultancy.
I'm championing independent businesses.....I hope you do to!

Afternoon Tea at Hotal La Tour Birmingham
Would afternoon tea everyday be too indulgent?
#4
It's no secret by now that I adore taking afternoon tea. Spending a few hours, with my female family and friends, enjoying lady like bites and champagne in a relaxed atmosphere, really is a wonderful way to while away the afternoon. So when I got invited* to sample afternoon tea at Hotel La Tour in Birmingham, I was happy to indulge. I invited my mum to come with me as she has a celebration this week and has been with me on my last few afternoon tea indulges, so very well positioned to help me review this new venue.
I must admit to being quite intrigued to see inside Hotel La Tour, which is the newest hotel in central Birmingham, having read a number of items in the local press around the launch. I can see the hotel it if I travel into Birmingham by train and it fits well into the landscape. It is the first in a new group of hotels to be built by independent operator Hotel La Tour Ltd. It has 174 bedrooms and suites, Marcus Wareing inspired restaurant and bar, dedicated conference and events floor, and a coffee shop. Stepping into the hotel reception gives you a good taste of what is to come. A large open space with oversized lamps and velvet chairs and the most gorgeous bauble light shade. We were greeted by Jane, who we later discovered is the hotel's Operations Manager, who said she would let the restaurant know we were here.
We made our way up to the first floor and entered the bar which leads to the restaurant. The decor is very much to my liking. I loved the black and white photos of fifties glamour, the oversized lamps and lush classic colours of the velvet chairs. Even though the space is open and light, it feels very opulent. I imagine at night time it will feel very seductive.
We were greeted my the maƮtre d' and were given a choice of where we wanted to sit. We chose one of the sofas, which gave us a good view of the bar, so that we could people watch. I really love the Alice n Wonderland red chairs which are placed right at the tip of the room.
We were asked to peruse the menu and decide what we would like to drink. We were brought a chilled glass of Prosseco which was perfect for toasting mum's celebration. Mum grades a place by it's coffee, so having ordered lattes, she declared that it was lovely. Believe me there is such a thing as a bad latte, having sampled quite a few. It wasn't long before our bare cake stand arrived in preparation for afternoon tea. We found out later that these were made by a Birmingham company called Heritage. They also made the plates to fit the stand, they have an ingenious lip on each side so that you can easily lift them of the stand to place on the table. Not long after came the afternoon tea selection and what a selection it was - delicate, imaginative and inviting.
There were a number of things that sets this afternoon tea apart from others that I have tried. Both mum and I loved the inside out cucumber sandwiches, so simple but so delicious. I've never had Welsh Rarebit at afternoon tea, but what an imaginative idea. It was delicious with the crunchy bread that came with it, although slightly too crunchy for mum, which meant more for me. There was a good selection of fresh sandwiches, with enough for two of each flavour per person.
As we were finishing our sandwiches Jane came and asked us how we were getting on. We spent quite a time talking to her finding out more about the hotel, the afternoon tea and where else we have taken afternoon tea. Whilst speaking with Jane we got to sample an Earl Grey Bellini, which we both declared we will certainly be having again. Move over Mojitos there's a new favourite cocktail on the block! Jane mentioned that the scones have dried strawberries on the top, which take three days to prepare. So with that we tucked in.
We thought the selection of cakes were lovely and completely different to others we have tried. It was nice that they are little bite size so that you can sample all of them without feeling too guilty. Included were mini jaffa cakes, treacle tarts, walnut whip and eton mess. Whilst these might have been mini in size, they certainly packed a punch in the flavour stakes.
During the two hours we spent in the bar, there were quite a few people who had come in for drinks, as well as lunch. The table opposite us opted for homemade burgers, which looking at them I know SBA would love to try. And I'll certainly be back for more afternoon teas and Earl Grey Bellinis. This is an afternoon tea that raises the bar and Head Chef Alex Penhaligon has certainly got the right combination of style and flavour. It was a shame that our time at Hotel La Tour had to come to an end. We could have easily stayed and soaked up the relaxing atmosphere for many more hours.
The service throughout was impeccable, you certainly weren't rushed but checked on just the right amount of times. The surroundings are very relaxing, being both chic and opulent. Afternoon tea at Hotel La Tour costs £15.95 which we think is exceptional value. At the moment it is served Friday to Sunday between 2pm and 5pm. Mum and I both think that this just pips the Hyatt in Birmingham due to the imaginative selections and certainly rivals the big London hotels. We wouldn't hesitate recommending this afternoon tea, whether for a celebration or just because you fancy it.
An afternoon tea fit for a Queen....it gets my seal of approval!
LB rating: 8.5/10
