Clandestine Cake Club

Do you love cake?

I've been a bit busy of late and haven't had lots of opportunities to log into Twitter and catch up on what is happening. Wednesday night I took a few minutes to check tweets and came across a conversation from Daisy Cupcakes about cake clubs near Warwick. I'd seen the piece on TV, whilst at the gym, about the Clandestine Cake Clubs. So whilst cycling, and going no where fast, I watched people eat gorgeous cake.  I didn't think much of it until I saw the tweet from Daisy.  I dived straight in and asked if I could go along if she found a local club.  She did and late that night I was baking my jewelled cherry and banana cake to take with me.   And so last night I went to my first Clandestine Cake Club in Stratford-upon-Avon with Daisy Cupcakes, her husband Andrew and Sally Crane.

The concept is that everyone bakes a cake and takes it along to a 'secret' venue.  Some clubs do have themes so you have to bake a cake around the theme. Seen as I had baked a cake with the ingredients I had in, thanks to Nigella, I hoped there wasn't a theme, or at least I would be forgiven as it was my first time.
I turned up at the venue where they had set a side a lovely room for us.  I loved this patch work chair.
Soon lots of people turned up all carrying cake boxes with gorgeous cakes in them. Once everyone had lifted the lid on their cake and they were set out on tables next to vintage plates, Abbey who runs the Stratford-upon-Avon club  gave a brief introduction. This is only the second time the club had met, which was nice as there were others in the same boat as us.  I must admit all the cakes looked lovely, some people had obviously spent along time making them.  Unlike my whipped up cake which took 10 minutes mixing and 45 minutes baking time.
As people got settled with drinks and grabbed plates, it was time to start sampling. It's up to you how many you try and how big a piece you want.  Although you soon work out that after one or two medium pieces, you should have gone smaller. Especially if you are keen to sample everything.
There were some lovely cakes including a parsnip and apple cake and a stunning Union Jack cake.  I only managed a couple of slices before I was full and I hadn't even had dinner in anticipation of eating cake.
As people started to sample the cakes the conversation flowed. It was a lovely mixed group with about 25 people, of all ages, in total through the evening.
I can't wait for the next cake club, at least then I'll have more prep time so can plan something a little more experimental.  Although I have to say my jewelled cherry and banana cake got good reviews.

Keep calm......eat cake!
