I have coveted Mulberry handbags for many years. To me they are iconic as well as classic and defy fashion trends. They are quality investment pieces. This year they celebrated their 40th birthday, not bad for a truly English brand who are still producing handmade bags at their Somerset factory. I am not surprised they won Designer Brand 2010 at the British Fashion Awards in December.
I brought my first Mulberry about six years ago and considering I wanted one so much I rarely use it, due to the type of leather it is, so it stays in its dust bag.
Since then my love for Mulberry has grown with the next bag on my 'wish list' being the iconic Bayswater. For a long time I was undecided as to which colour to get, I'd swap and change between oak natural leather, black or black patent.
Last year I finally made the decision and chose the black Bayswater. I can safely say this does not stay in its dust bag and has been used countless times. It is such a classic bag that it can be used both during the day and evening.
I had also seen the Daria medium hobo which I thought was a nice slouchy bag. On a trip to London I found myself in the flagship Old Bond Street store and what caught my eye was the Dario Satchel in a rich burgundy colour. I liked the option to lengthen the strap so it can be worn several ways. I had a weak moment and found myself at the cash desk. My justification for purchasing this meant I didn't have to buy the Anthony messenger as well. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
On this shopping trip SBA also brought her first Mulberry. She brought the Hayden which really suits her style and is a classic that will last her for years to come. However I fear, like me, this has given her a taste for more!
I read in the September issue of Marie Claire that Emma Hill, Creative Director of Mulberry, wants to 'make bright and playful handbags' whilst 'remaining lightweight and squidgy'. New for winter 2011 will be cheaper bags with quilting, chain handles and gold plaques. I think it is good that they are offering more affordable handbags, if it means people can start their Mulberry collection, as long as they don't compromise on the quality or uniqueness.
Browsing the official Mulberry website and visiting Harvey Nichols and Selfridges there are some lovely styles in the A/W 2011 collection, whether you are looking for a small evening bag, a structured day bag, slouchy day bag, shopping tote or a messenger bag, there is something for every style and budget.
I am currently coveting the Bayswater tote, Mitzy Tote, Mitzy Hobo and Somerset shopper. But I think it will be a while before I can justify another purchase and then it might have to be one in, one out.
I also have to admit to being seduced by Mulberry accessories, but that's for another post!
So do I use or wear my handbags? I can definitely say I wear my Mulberry's....to me they finish an outfit.
LB's Top Tip - It is always worth a trip to Biscester Village to check out the Mulberry store where you can get some great discounts.
